Welcome to 8th Grade Literature

Students in my classes complete various projects during the year and work both independently and in groups. The main goal in junior high language arts is to get every student ready to do his/her best in high school English courses.

This year you can access your teen's grades by logging onto edline.com. Individual grades will be posted weekly. This is a great way to increase communication among student, teacher, and parent.
The eighth grade literature textbook covers such topics as short stories, drama, non-fiction, poetry, myths, legends, folk tales, and poetry. Students are required to complete assignments, which include outlines, study questions, and vocabulary, in a literature notebook. We also have a set of supplementary literature books for classroom use.

Students read novels that coordinate with topics they are studying in social studies classes. The novels for this year include Across Five Aprils about the Civil War, No Promises in the Wind about the Depression Era, Torn Thread portraying World War II, and the classic, The Pearl.

We also spend time writing essays that are in MLA format.  Students will need this for high school and college.
