Welcome to 6th Grade Reading
In our text Literature by Prentice Hall we will be focusing on fluency in oral reading and improving comprehension and vocabulary skills. We will read four novels throughout the course of the school year which include Hatchet, Long Way from Chicago, Maniac Magee, and Tuck Everlasting. The focus of these novels is to concentrate on the seven elements of literature. The tests are essay and usually take two class periods to complete. Occasionally we will have announced or pop quizzes on our novels.
Accelerated Reader points are set at 12 each quarter for sixth graders, and students are instructed to read books appropriate for their grade level. They will receive two AR grades, one is an average grade for all quizzes taken during the quarter and the other is a percentage grade which reflects points earned versus points expected each quarter.
The students will be assigned two reading projects for the year with rubrics provided. The first is an author report on their favorite author with a list of his/her works. Next, the students will be asked to create a poster on a book of their choice that depicts the seven elements of literature.
**Students, Always bring a dictionary and your own reading book to Reading class!**
