Welcome to 6th Grade Language Arts

Language Arts is comprised of Grammar, Spelling, and Creative Writing.  In Grammar we have daily lessons and assignments from our text Language Arts Today by McGraw-Hill.  We study each part of speech individually and then concentrate on sentence structure.  We also diagram sentences toward the end of the year.

In Spelling we complete one unit per week from our text Spelling and Vocabulary by Houghton-Mifflin. The entire unit's homework is due each Thursday before our weekly test on Friday.  It is advised that students do one section of the unit nightly because trying to complete it in one evening is quite difficult. There will be one unannounced bonus word per week taken from the Challenge Words section of the spelling list.

Students will write on specific topics or prompts in their creative writing journal several evenings a week. They will turn in one of these jounal entries every two weeks for a grade.  In addition, they will compose some formal pieces including a life map and a research paper.  Handwriting will be evaluated as 5% of the Language grade, and anything turned in for a grade must be written in cursive.
